Three Steps To a Younger Looking Computer

This article is for all of you that may have a computer sitting around that lives in an old, ugly…probably creme colored case.  I know there are plenty of you out there.  Luckily, with a little time and a few supplies, you can have your computer looking and feeling younger in no time!  I’ve bolded the important points for those of you who don’t like to read.

First things first…Color.  Most newer systems on the market are painted black.  Why?  Well, I don’t really have a good answer to that other than to say that it generally just looks better.  For years we were stuck with creme colored towers and while for some purposes and applications they look alright, they have one disadvantage and that is that they show dirt and dust incredibly easy.  This means that they look uglier quicker, which in tern means they look older quicker.  Therefore, the first step to making your computer look newer is to paint it black.  If your system is already black, good for you!  You’re already one step ahead!

The second step…A Window.  No, that doesn’t mean add a Windows operating system.  That means you physically cut a hole in one of the side panels of your case and use it as a window.  To do this you will need a few tools, such as a plasma cutter.  If you don’t have access to one of these incredibly awesome cutting machines, then a drill press and a scroll saw/jig saw will do (you could use metal sheers, but it might turn out badly).  Once you’ve cut your hole, you can use between 1/8 and 1/4 inch plexiglass to cover it back up.  You will want to mount the plexiglass on the inside of the side panel with some type of small screw.  It’s recommended that you pre-drill any screw holes, as plexiglass can split very easily.  For a simpler approach, some sort of adhesive glue or tape could possibly be used, however I have no experience with this and therefore cannot recommend it.

Finally, once you’ve completed your paint job and window work, you’re ready to add the final touch…Colored FANS!  Head on over to your local Staples, Radio Shack, or Circuit City (Best Buy would work too, but I’ve read too many negative stories about them lately) and pick yourself up a couple of colored fans.  I prefer blue and red, but it’s completely up to you.  You could even get yourself a multicolored fan.  Pop those into place, turn out the lights in the room and enjoy!

Final product (I have yet to paint mine…so the black is photoshopped)

As a side note, if you have a floppy drive in your tower, do your best to hide it.  It really shows your age ;-)
