I was looking through some news tonight and I noticed an article on Digg that sparked my attention regarding an upcoming media center software package for the Gnome desktop environment in Linux. Seeing as I just did two articles regarding building your own media center pc, I thought that this would be welcomed news for those of you who are real Linux junkies. The software is called Sofa Media Center and from the looks of it, it is working but is still under heavy construction. As of right now, it looks to support music playback through Rythmbox and local video playback provided by GStreamer. After a quick glance at the features list, it also looks like the developers are actively working on adding other common features such as DVD, weather forecast and podcast support. This new application looks like it will be a nice addition to the currently available Linux media center apps such as LinuxMCE, MythTV, and GeeXboX.
