Working in customer service and retail often expose employees to some pretty interesting customers. You know the kind; they call you up right before the store closes demanding to know why their computer won’t start even though they swear on their life that they’ve properly checked all the connections. After fifteen minutes and countless obscene gestures directed towards the phone, they finally realize that they forgot to plug their system back in after that nasty thunderstorm a few hours ago. Well, if you find these type of situations humorous, than this should be right up your alley. A few months back, my girlfriend, who is an employee for Staples here in our hometown, received a call from a frantic female customer wanting to know why a certain electronic device wasn’t working. When asked what brand the device was, she replied promptly stating that it was an S.O.N.Y. (and yes, she actually spelled it out as if it were an acronym for something). From that point on, she again began questioning my girlfriend as to why her S.O.N.Y. wasn’t working. Naturally amused by the entire situation, she directed the call to the Business Machines department where I can only imagine the type of fun they had with her.
After hearing about this, I became curious…in today’s world with all of the advertising and marketing that goes on, how do you not know that S.O.N.Y. is actually the name of a fairly large technology company. My only thought is that maybe she was just older and wasn’t really ever introduced to anything made by Sony, as hard as that seems like it would be.
